Decatur Township Assessor
Our office is better than ever! We’ve made a lot of improvements in how the office operates, creating a taxpayer friendly office and embracing advances in technology. This all results in more accurate assessments for you, our taxpayers, and a more efficient office.
We all know that part of being a property owner is being pro-active in matters concerning that property. I urge everyone to take a look at their real estate taxes. Check your tax bill to see if you have all the exemptions you’re entitled to. While you’re at it, check your property record card to ensure it correctly reflects your home’s characteristics, such as whether or not you have a basement or garage.
Fortunately, you can check these things from the comfort of your home. You can check your tax bill on the Macon County website, and you can check your property details on this website. If the information we have on file is not correct, please contact us so we can schedule a site inspection of your property.
If you believe your assessment is not correct, you can file a ‘soft appeal’ with our office. This is a process that I’m very proud to offer taxpayers. In keeping with my commitment of honest and open government, my staff and I have instituted a user-friendly process for you to file an informal appeal.
You may contact my office by phone, email or in person to file your soft appeal. My staff and I will review your appeal and contact you with our decision, or if you would like, we can schedule an appointment for you to meet with me to discuss your assessment. We encourage your participation and welcome the opportunity to help you understand how the process works.
We will be holding outreach sessions throughout the year, explaining how the assessment process works. We want you to understand how your tax bill is calculated and what you can do to ensure you are receiving all the exemptions to which you are entitled.
The Assessor’s Office is committed to being transparent, educating taxpayers and serving the public. It is the mission of this office to ensure every property is assessed fairly and equitably, and that the assessment process is communicated effectively to every property owner.
It is our pleasure to serve you. We encourage your participation in the assessment process and welcome your involvement. Please remember, we are here to help!
